Catch of the Week #5: What turns someone into a social entrepreneur?

What inspires someone to become a social entrepreneur, or a regular entrepreneur for that matter?

Objectively speaking, rolling the dice with your life and starting your own company seems like a crazy thing to do. And yet, many people take the leap. We’ve compiled three ideas and organizations that are looking into why people start social enterprises or are helping them develop the skills they will need to start one.

Proximity to other social entrepreneurs?

A recent report from the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation explored the issue of why people start social enterprises. Their hypothesis was that people are ...

Catch of the Week #4: Solving food deserts & the Nobel Peace Prize

This Catch of the Week is the video edition.

We wanted to share an interview about one girl’s struggle to ensure access to education for all, and an American who took food production into his own hands and started a fantastic urban agriculture project in Los Angeles.

The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded this week to a watchdog organization overseeing the destruction of Syria’s chemical weapons stockpile.

“The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons is an independent international body formed in 1997 to implement a new global treaty prohibiting the stockpiling of chemical weapons.” The organization is ...

Fringe Projects #2: Can social innovation help you get better healthcare?

Healthcare can be a contentious issue.

Depending on the country, healthcare can be government subsidized, privately run, or free for citizens. (Check out this article on 10 different health care systems from around the world to learn more.) The subject can be rife with conflict as well – the current United States government shutdown being a prime example as the Affordable Care Act, or President Obama’s health care reform act, is the key issue. Political beliefs and personal situation both play a large role in people’s ideas of what kind of healthcare their country should have. Despite these issues ...

CI: What is Collective Intelligence?

Intelligence is not just something that happens inside individual minds.

It also arises within groups of individuals and this phenomenon can be quite powerful.  For a number of months Imagination for People has been working on software that will facilitate the creation of what is called ‘collective intelligence.’ In preparation for the launch of this software, we thought we would take some time to introduce the I4P community to collective intelligence (CI) and show off some of its benefits.

So what is collective intelligence?

The widely accepted definition states that collective intelligence is the ability of a group of people ...

Catch of the Week #2: SocEnt Cities, Hult Prize Winners & Happiness

This past week was a big one for social entrepreneurship.

This year over 11 000 applicants from more than 150 countries submitted applications for the Hult Prize.

  • The prize awards $1 million to a student group that proposes a project to solve the chosen problem. This year: food security. The pool of applicants was whittled down to 26 students in 6 teams. Projects ranged from innovations ...

Fringe Projects #1: Prison Reform

The prison system is probably not something most of us spend much time thinking about. Whenever the penitentiary system does come up in conversation, it usually relates to negative aspects such as drugs, gangs, mental health issues, and abuse.  But a well-functioning rehabilitation system is crucial to the success of any stable society.  It stands to reason that the area would be prime for social innovation, and indeed there are many innovative ideas being proposed for prisons around the world.

First up, Puppies Behind Bars.

  • This project, started in New York in 1997, is based on the idea that inmates ...

Catch of the Week #1: Social Isolation vs Social Innovation

The Internet will do great things, they said.

Social Isolation vs Social Innovation

Fortunately, this is a tear in society’s fabric that social innovation is seeking ...
