About the project Edit

Many students of young people feel the itch to take a break from the class room and go off and try something new before they settle into a degree or embark on their career. Gap years can also be a great opportunity to discover what you’re passionate about and what you really want to do. So if you think a gap year could be the perfect option for you, here’s how to get started.

Consider Your Funds:

Taking off travelling is an excellent way to spend your year out, but can be super pricey. Make sure you have concrete plans of how you will finance your way. A great way of getting around this issue is to get some form of work while you are away. There are a few options for this, but popular ones include teaching English as a foreign language (TEFL). This is a common option for Asian destinations, such as Thailand, Cambodia or China, but to name a few. More widespread is the chance of tourism work, in a hotel or holiday park, where English speaking staff are sought after.

Popular destinations include Australia and New Zealand, as a result of the hot weather and English speaking population. If you’ve got a skilled trade, work in New Zealand can be easier to obtain, as part of the rebuild after the Christchurch earthquake. For peace of mind, lining up some form of employment before you go is a good idea. Some countries, such as the US, require for you to have a job offer in place before you can even apply for a work visa.

If you fancy somewhere a little closer to home, consider Germany – there are no visa restrictions for EU citizens. Not only this, the economic conditions and levels of employment are higher in Germany than in a lot of other European nations, such as Spain, Italy or Greece. Sometimes it is easier to plan how you’re going to make money before you decide on a destination!

Broadening Your Horizons:

Getting out and seeing the world is a great way to expand your mind and learn new things, but make sure you make the most of it while you’re there. After all, there’s only so much you can learn sat at a bar. Volunteering is a great way to learn, develop and get awesome CV experience while you’re absorbing a different culture. There are extensive opportunities and a huge array of things you can get involved with, so there is scope to choose something relevant to your interests. For example, if you enjoy science, it’s quite likely you’ll be suitable to volunteer with wildlife and conservation. Teaching or interning can be great ways to get some valuable workplace skills while making a difference.

Whatever you choose to do on your gap year, make sure it’s something you’ll love doing. You’re taking a break for a reason, after all!
