About the project Edit

Wikispeed produced a car that received a five-star security rating and can attain a fuel efficiency of 100 miles per gallon (roughly 42.5 kilometres per litre). It was developed by a team of volunteers in just three months. The car is being sold for only $29,000, about a quarter of what a traditional industrial automobile firm would charge, and for which it would have needed at least five years of development and billions of dollars.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Wikispeed has designed and built the SGT01— a 100 mpg, four-seat commuter car with a mid-engine and rear-wheel drive. The first batch of 10 prototypes are on-sale for $25,000.00 USD. These first 10 cars are for individuals "who owned one of the first smart-phones, who love the most-efficient-technology, who want 100 mpg right now or want to own a piece of disruptive history". Meanwhile, Wikispeed is aggressively developing an ultra-efficient Comfy Commuter Car for the mass market, for which they are seeking additional start-up loans and investment.

The WikiSpeed car is designed for modularity, using sophisticated software development techniques (such as agile, scrum, and extreme programming), an open design, and local production by garages, using distributed manufacturing techniques.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Wikispeed is driven to change the world for the better. Their cars claim to be super efficient. They are developing convertible bodies as well a pickup truck which can be swapped out in about the time it takes to change a tire. This is made possible because:
• The cars are modular
• Improvements to any portion of the car are incorporated immediately unlike a traditional car company
• An agile, distributed international team is working on creating the best solution possible

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Today WIKISPEED is comprised of more than 110 all-volunteer team members from six countries. Their prototype manufacturing facility in Hillsdale, Michigan, produces the ultraefficient SGT01.

New members are invited and will be paired with an experienced professional, email to join in or find out how to start a prototype car build site in your area.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

Wikispeed’s vision is to change the way manufacturers and consumers think about cars. They have built shops in Seattle, Washington, Everett, Washington, Germantown, Maryland, and in Hillsdale, Michigan, with CAD, Web, PR, and legal help from Baltimore, San Francisco, Cincinnati, Detroit, and many cities in between.

They are now opening facilities in Houston, Texas, London, England, Cologne, Germany, and Barcelona, Spain. Though their team is highly distributed, their ability to work efficiently was validated when the SGT01 placed tenth out of hundreds of competitors in 2010 Progressive Insurance Automotive X Prize.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

The Wikispeed Web site features the following announcement: "Any and all donations and support to Team WIKISPEED (WIKISPEED Inc.) are treated as micro-investments. If we realize profit, we commit to repaying all of you plus any return responsible, so that if we profit you profit too. This is not at all over seen by the FTC, is fuzzy math because we can't yet commit to any rate of return, and please keep in mind we have no profit motive and intend to invest revenues directly back into our ability to deliver. But if we do realize profit, you will too."
