About the project Edit

Location: Parish of San Rafael de la Laguna, Otavalo, Ecuador

Organization: Junta Parroquial (highest political and administrative authority of the Laguna San Rafael).

The challenge is to improve the water quality of Lake Imbakucha (San Pablo). The solution to this challenge resulted in increased economic activity and income of the population of the Parish.

The program's goal was basically to build a biological waste water treatment using aquatic plants, for improving the health status of the population and the conservation of natural resources, flora and fauna of the community San Miguel Bajo de la Parroquia de San Rafael de la Laguna. We wanted to achieve awareness of the inhabitants of these towns on the management of both liquid and solid wastes, get crystal clear and odorless water suitable to irrigate the reeds and reduce pollutants and aerobic bacteria.

But we also have improved families income through the development of the program of product.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Organized communities, with the support of two NGOs, found new businesses.
They built the plant to decontaminate water, increased production of reeds - the raw material of their craft- , built a factory of reed furniture. They used duckweed and lechugín, decontamination agents, as fertilizers and to feed pigd.

The Assembly voted to protect the ecosystem, plant native trees, and orient themselves towards tourism, for which they founded a nursery that sells vernacular species.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The lesson learned with this project is that a community that is organized to overcome a collective problem, such as communal water pollution, strengthens herself by acquiring new skills, partnering with NGO's and sister communities in a process that transforms them into producers, traders, tourist agents and protectors of their environment.

Impact: Over a hundred leaders are prepared academically and have trained others. The self-esteem of the population increased. The waters were decontaminated by 90% and the communities prospered with new community enterprises.
