About the project Edit

Telescoping is a social housing project realized in Champigny sur Marne that corresponds to a “sandwich” of various architectural models: a provocative pile of townhouses, rows of collective dwellings and suburban-style single-family homes, some of which are placed on the roof half empty!

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Realized by architect Edouard François, Telescoping can be seen as a building that reconciles housing models by giving them the “same value” and that reconnects downtown what was rejected on the outskirts: the hybrid synergy of single, collective and suburban dwellings integrated into the same building that has a unique – even a little crazy – allure.

Location: avenue du 8 mai 1945 and rue du 11 novembre, Mordacs district in Champigny-sur-Marne (94)
Project management: Paris Habitat – OPH
Program: 114 dwellings and 4 businesses
Area: 8,300 square metres net surface area (floor space/traffic flow)

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The majority of the social housing production is made up of relatively cheap uninventive buildings. Production is subject to constraints on both speed and low cost. The many energy and environmental standards are limiting and do not make architectural innovation or large windows an easy task. In this context, the Telescoping project is a rare example of boldness in social housing.
