About the project Edit

Technopôle Angus is an example of urban renewal developed by the Société de développement Angus (SDA) following the closure of Canadian Pacific (CP) workshops in Montreal’s Rosemont area. It is the only business park that distinguishes itself by a great quality of life in urban Montreal, accessibility of all modes of transportation and concrete actions in sustainable development whether they be environmental, social or economic. Technopôle Angus is home to 53 companies, institutions and organizations that employ more than 2,000 workers in growth sectors such as: health and life sciences, information technology and communications and social economy.

Founded in 1995, SDA is a social economy firm that develops urban renewal projects that have significant benefits for the community. It is active in Montreal and Quebec City.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Technopôle Angus is a project that rallies and unites. It was developed in collaboration with the local community. Its goal is job recreation and providing a new local economy in Rosemont La-Petite-Patrie. Technopôle Angus was designed and built in an ecological way. An LEED policy was adopted for all buildings.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The realization of this project has created many jobs. By hosting Technopôle Angus’ Le Carrefour de l’économie sociale – The Centre of Social Economy – that brought together many social economy companies, the SDA was created many jobs particulary for at-risk youth. By balancing the economy and social responsibility, the SDA helped with social and economic development in Rosemont.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

SDA’s expertise in renewal developed by realizing Technopôle Angus is a source of inspiration for other projects. SDA transferred its know-how to a part of Saint-Laurent Boulevard with the realization of 2-22, a cultural building that was the beginning of the sector’s revitalization. Technopôle Angus is considered a model of success internationally.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

The massive loss of jobs for the local population of Rosemont was the catalyst to develop Technopôle Angus. A group of people from the local and other economic, social and political communities actively engaged to support the economy and local jobs by proposing a viable economic project: Technopôle Angus – a successful bet!

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Technopôle Angus’ business model rests on a great diversity of companies working in various sectors where social economy is strongly represented. It brings together specialized workers and handlers. The model associates social economy, well-being in the workplace, preservation of heritage and the environment, and sustainable development. Technopôle Angus’ success embodies a philosophy of community economic development in which economy was conceived for community service.
