About the project Edit

The Institut du Nouveau Monde (INM) organized a Special Summit Winter School for young people between the ages of 15 and 35 and four citizen forums for the Summit on Higher Education.

In addition to preparing for the Summit on Higher Education, the Institut du Nouveau Monde is organizing five activities that will allow citizens to express themselves on Summit themes. One of the activities is geared specifically towards young people.

The weekend of January 25, 26 and 27, the INM proposes to young people between 15 and 35 a Special Summit Winter School at the University of Laval in Quebec.

The INM will hold four citizen forums: two in Rouyn-Noranda and the Saguenay on January 12, one in Gatineau on January 19 and one in Montreal on February 12. They will allow citizens of all ages and backgrounds to express their vision of higher education in Quebec. These forums are open to everyone.

Pierre Duchesne, Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology, made the announcement today while unveiling the Summit’s content approach. It was at the Minister’s request that the INM had proposed having these activities.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

“The INM is very proud to be able to contribute to citizen participation in the public debate about the future of colleges and universities in Quebec in parallel with the formal process brought by the government,” stated Michel Venne, Director General of the INM.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The Special Summit Winter School will provide the opportunity for 500 or so young people to debate the same issues. Twenty-one Quebec regional youth forums will act as privileged partners of the Winter School, in this way ensuring a regional base and diversity of participants.

Results of the deliberations held during the forums and during Winter School will be the focus of two reports that will be submitted to the Minister for consideration regarding the Summit.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

This activity was inspired by the INM Summer School that has been taking place every year since 2004.

The INM is the reference for citizen participation in Quebec and has organized many forums like those that were proposed to citizens in the pre-Summit process. INM services were retained over the years by among others, the Bouchard-Taylor Commission, the Minister of Culture and Communication in Quebec for Agenda 21 on culture, the Director General of Elections and many others.

As the inspiration of the Special Summit Winter School, the INM Summer School has therefore, become the most important youth activity in Quebec. Just like regional youth forums, it has been recognized at the heart of the government of Quebec’s Youth Action Strategy for the last five years. In 2010, the INM Summer School was recognized as one of the three best educational practices for Citizenship in Canada by the Institute for Canadian Citizenship.

More details on these five activities will be unveiled as of December 1st. In the meantime, the public can send their questions or show their interest in participating by emailing ecolehiver@inm.qc.ca.
