About the project Edit

The concept behind #soleofthecity is to use a mobile phone to capture the soul of the city in a single shot that represents urban Dubai.

The shots are then shared on Instagram with the hashtag #soleofthecity. There was a competition and the finalists' pictures were selected to be exhibited at the jamjar.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

#Soleofthecity enables citizens to capture what they love about their city with a very accessible tool. They help define it and show other aspects if it that could sometimes be left out from the medias or the general ideas that people have about it. It helps them connect to their city in an artistic way that is not elitist.

As every opinion and representation are different, every picture will be different, from a cultural or architectural point of view.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Much has been made recently of DIY urbanism and the potential regenerative characteristics it can engender, and events like #SoleOfTheCity, while not producing hard urban community infrastructure, aid in giving a platform to the creativity of individual urbanites.

Small-scale creative initiatives like this are critical in fostering a ‘buzz’ within a city (often sought after by urban governance), and while temporary (in this case at least), it offer community-based creativity that needs to sit alongside, and more importantly, interact with the large-scale planned creative industry projects.

It helps citizens really engage in their own city, be part of it, to not feel left out, as they are the one who are composing that city.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

This project can be developed in every city, in any form possible.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

iPhonography and Instagramming are new and exciting ways to produce art in the modern world, as it is accessible to almost everyone. #Soleofthecity wanted these social and young movements to be recognized and developed in the United Arab Emirates, as it is in other parts of the world.
