About the project Edit

Soinu Mapa offers the opportunity to explore the Basque Country through sound—from nature, the city, the mountains, the highway, animals, festivals, as well as specific locations and events. Anyone can access and reuse these geolocalized sounds. This site is open to the contribution and participation of internet-users (crowdsourcing), who can add new sound files.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

The Soinu Mapa project provides users with an increased awareness and understanding of the region through the sounds that make up its acoustic character. This auditory chart of geotagged and geolocalized sounds, created by local citizens, opens the door to new representations of the region. The data is open and reusable, thus allowing anyone to create his or her own representation of the Basque Country’s acoustic landscape.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Citizen participation in the development of this acoustic database and the exploration of a territorial space through new perspectives.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

New projects in which many artists have participated has been created following SOINUMAPA:

- HOTS! Radio Paisaje Sonoro , Online radio showing different sound works in several ways that work the Soundscape concept in a broad sense.
- LUBLIN SOUNDMAP , : A collective made Sound map of Lublin city, Poland.
- SATURNIA SOUND MAP , A collectively made Sound map for the Italian town of Saturnia, located in Tuscany, using the tools developed by SoinuMapa and managed by the Soinumapa team.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

SOINU MAPA was born in 2005 at Audiolab, the sound department of Arteleku contemporary art center from Donostia-San Sebastián. From the very begining has been directed by Xabier Erkizia with the great support of Oier Iruretagoiena, Xavier Balderas, Luz Maria Sanchez and Enrike Hurtado, without whom wouldn’t be possible to keep this project alive. Nowadays is directed by a group of editors that are working as a collective
