About the project Edit

SmartAgro hopes to solve a societal problem and support farmers in developing countries by improving the exchanges between different players in the agricultural sector: producers, NGOs, commodity buyers, etc. We have created a software infrastructure to respond to their data needs.

Themes

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

This project is unique in its category due to its use of low-cost smartphones, their installed equipment such as GPS, cameras, etc., and their ease of use for example, the SmartAgro software uses big icons and few written texts, making it useful for illiterate people.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

SmartAgro does not just provide farmers with temporary aid, but also new skills: how to locate buyers more easily and increase their negotiation power.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Various existing initiatives are already using mobile phones with the goal of helping farmers in developing countries but these solutions are based solely on the use of text messaging. Today, companies are developing new technology to make internet and new generation mobile phones accessible to the bottom of the social pyramid and equipment manufacturers are launching low-cost smartphones.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

This project began with the goal of finding a solution to attain Goal 8 in the United Nations Millennium Development Goals and was presented for the first time at the Imagine Cup, an international student technology competition hosted by Microsoft.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

The farmers collect field data and share them free-of-charge with NGOs. This project has been made economically viable through the sale of these data to different players such as buyers, research centres, statistic institutes, etc. and the establishment of a marketplace where buyers can publish call for tenders, for which SmartAgro receives a portion of the commissions.
