About the project Edit

Slugging derives from the term slug or counterfeit coin. It is a completely original carpooling practice that has been introduced in some U.S. cities. Motorists stop at a well-defined stops (with a sign indicating to the slug their destination), they take one or two passengers on board, and use the highways reserved for carpools (which usually run better) so that they may access downtown more quickly. This form of carpooling was first introduced in the 1970s in Washington to address the rise in gas prices due to the Arab oil embargo. Today, it is one of the most widely used transportation systems in the city, so much so that city planners hope to encourage the building of designated carpooling areas.

"Slugging" is an organized system with its own rules and etiquette and it is completely free. The site Slug Lines provides all of details about its operation as well as maps of locations in Washington and some of the surrounding cities - indicating where people can wait for a ride. Among the rules to be observed: there should not be any conversation between the driver and passenger, except of course, for basic communication. No gifts or money should be exchanged. Drivers must not make stops on the way.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Slugging is a very unique initiative, it takes advantage of the lanes reserved for vehicles with more than one passenger (created in most major cities) in order to reduce traffic congestion during the morning and rush hours. These lanes encourage motorists to carpool or use public transport. It was in these circumstances that slugging was born.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Slugging is a "give-take" situation: drivers take passengers to designated locations by using the reserved lanes, thus arriving at the passenger's travel destination much faster. Slugging is a free method of transportation and it saves a great deal of time. Finally, slugging plays an important role in reducing traffic and urban pollution.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The practice of slugging has spread quickly to other cities facing traffic problems, cities like, San Francisco, Houston and Pittsburgh, but they have enjoyed less success. In order for slugging to spread, a city must have a lot of traffic and lanes that are reserved for vehicles with three or more people. Some believe that this type of carpooling works especially well where public transportation systems are less developed.
