About the project Edit

Convivium (plural convivia) is a Latin word that means “feast, reception, banquet”. Slow Food borrowed this term to refer to its local chapters.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

At Convivia, members get together to establish relationships with producers, run campaigns to protect traditional food products, organize tastings and workshops, encourage chefs to use local products, select the producers who will participate in international events and work to develop taste education in schools. More importantly, they cultivate an appreciation of pleasure and quality in everyday life.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Slow Food conceived of Terra Madre, a global project whose goal is to build a network of people in the food chain with food communities at the heart, in order to put into place a new agri-food approach that better respects humanity, nature and the oceans. These communities – shepherds, farmers and fishermen among others – work locally to protect their artisanal practices. Every two years, different players in the Terra Madre network meet in Turin to discuss issues that affect them and to be heard.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Slow Food Convivia are local associations that have Slow Food 100,000 members. Today, there are 1,300 Convivia that spread the Slow Food philosophy around the world and translate it into concrete actions according to their desires and their imagination. Each Convivium organizes demonstrations and activities.
