The milking robot is a permanent facility to milk cows. The cow goes into a stall, is blocked, then automatically identified by its flea collar. Food is dropped into a trough in front of it to keep it distracted and docile. A robotic arm then moves under the animal to detect the position of the four udders (position and shape are different for each animal). Detection is done with infrared or optical analysis. Once the udders are identified, they are cleaned and sleeves are attached one at a time, then the milking starts like in a regular facility. As the animal is identified by its collar, all the milking data (volume of milk, cells, etc.) is transmitted to a computer operating system.


In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Several techniques exist, but what is unique about this robot is that several tasks are executed automatically without outside intervention by anyone, including:

- detecting the uddeers
- cleaning the udders
- attaching the sleeves one by one
- recording the animal’s personal data (volume, cells, etc.)

What is the social value of this project? Edit

This is a robot that really helps and supports milk producers. It has several benefits in terms of saving time and controlling operating expenses. With the increased revenues that it brings, the milking robot helps improve producers’ social conditions.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

This initiative is used in France and represents more than 80% of new milking facilities in Scandinavian countries. In a country like Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger where breeding has an important place, this technique helps considerably improve producers’ and even breeders’ revenues.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

This project has several triggering factors:

- high competition
- market demands for quality products
- demand for milk products that is increasing more and more
- cost of labour

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Economically, the robot provides several benefits both at a microeconomic and macroeconomic one in terms of improving sales of production units increasing gross national income (GNI).
