About the project Edit

Reach Out is an information and support service using evidence based principles and technology to help teens and young adults facing tough times and struggling with mental health issues. All content is written by teens and young adults, for teens and young adults, to meet them where they are, and help them recognize their own strengths and use those strengths to overcome their difficulties and/or seek help if necessary. The Inspire USA Foundation oversees Reach Out. The Foundation is a newly formed non-profit with offices in San Francisco, whose mission is to help millions of teens and young adults lead happier lives. Inspire’s vision for Reach Out is for it to become a site visited by 250,000 unique visitors per month by summer 2010.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Reach Out is a unique site by the way it uses technologies to reach out to teens and young adults. The site contains a wide variety of information about issues affecting young people in the form of fact sheets, stories, interviews, podcasts and online forums. The Reach Out ‘crew’ established a youth involvement program, ensuring that young people told them how to run the show. They also began to add interactive features such a and an SMS service that teens and young adults could subscribe to for free to receive weekly text messages on managing stress and staying positive leading up to exams. Reach Out Australia also released Reach Out Central (ROC), an online interactive game where players get to experience real life situations and learn from virtual experience.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Reach Out provides teens and young adults with a non-threatening first step to explore how they can help themselves through a tough time. They believe young adults and teens have the strength to develop skills to get through a tough time and to feel comfortable with the knowledge they receive to seek additional help for themselves.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Reach Out was founded in Australia 1998 with the aim of targeting youth suicide. Since then they have broadened their work to cover a much larger range of issues including depression, eating disorders, body image, bullying, stress, conflict, drugs and alcohol and more. Reach Out success in Australia pushed Inspire to set out a Reach Out in the United States. Reach Out has become a global brand with the goal of being available around the world. The latest addition is Inspire Ireland.
