Building a local media of information with Hochelaga-Maisonneuve citizens, residents and neighbourhood workers

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Unique? QuartierHochelaga.com (QH) is today the only local media conceived and designed by residents and neighbourhood workers. Unique, free and independent, QH wants to give everyone a chance – professionals and citizens – to be heard and to publish news and stories.

Unique? As much by the transparency of its open and inclusive approach as with the public activities that strive to establish real connections with people who are open to discussion in the field before being transported to the digital world. A place of discussion where citizens, organizations, institutions, businesses and elected members become idea people, commentators, co-creators, collaborators and even products of this new model of media.

Creative? Because you have to be to exist. We must allow ourselves to dream as artists, to create exceptional business solutions, to be there where we’re not expected to be. We must be creative to make new channels and new vehicles of information, challenge the way information is diffused and ownership of content. Finally, be equally creative in the project’s financing, containers, content and artisans.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Inclusive, unifying, likeable, creative, accessible and generous: QuartierHochelaga.com (QH) is local media that reflects its residents, citizens and neighbourhood workers. To inform, but mostly, be of service, communicate, go towards others and help each other.
QH wants to address as many people as possible and intermingle (in the largest sense, social, economic, intergenerational, etc.) – its main cause. A media that goes against the current, to the extent where social impact is more important than profit. As such, QH founders have chosen the cooperative formula as a mode of partnership and operation. The cooperative model has the wind in its sails and is hyperlocal as well.

The project also strives to promote economic development of the neighbourhood by creating opportunities to diversify Hochelaga-Maisonneuve’s economy. Here is a description of the project (in French only) http://www.quartierhochelaga.com/le-projet/.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Our project is currently in the pre-startup phase. We are gathering information, training work cells and developing our network of collaborators. Several important local economic development stakeholders have shown interest in the project.

The launch date of the website will be revealed soon.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

The first factor or more, finding: several needs remain unmet in local communication.

First, as a citizen, the lack of information on events and existing resources in the neighbourhood. From the organizations’ point of view (community, public or private), the lack of visibility and difficulty communicating effectively with the population and their clients. Therefore, the project aims to make content that was produced in the neighbourhood and about it, available. The QuartierHochelaga.com platform will certainly meet the need by centralizing and redeploying local news and events.

On the other hand, there is a basic cultural question at the foundation of QuartierHochelaga.com. Media coverage that is terrible and sensationalistic on the part of large, national media, superficial coverage on the part of tasteless weekly chains. In short, the feeling that existing media have neither the sensitivity or the willingness to understand the particularities of this creative, solidarity, generous working neighbourhood that is loved by its residents.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

The QuartierHochelaga team is currently evaluating various financing strategies. Let’s keep our minds open, be creative and innovative in every way!
