About the project Edit

Opdop is a project that provides consulting for alternative and cooperative Internet Service Providers (ISPs). Its mission is to support the development of local providers by guaranteeing independence and neutrality.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

What makes Opdop’s approach original is that we specialize as consultants for providers in order to guarantee the neutrality of a project vis-à-vis its users (who are providers).

It is a unique approach because in general, consultants for providers also operate as Internet service providers.

The project’s other essential objective is its independence; in other words, it is self-financing.

Opdop’s activity has two components: network sharing, resources and competencies on the one hand and developing interconnections on the other.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The project’s social value is concentrated essentially on regional development. Trading GIX and NAP infrastructures that we develop or promote in the province, as well as network sharing that we create to connect neighbours, are important factors for local entrepreneurship and the emergence of new services and offers in the regions.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Any medium- or large-sized city can host an NAP (Network Access Point), GIX (Global Internet Exchange) or both, and work to connect neighbours to expand their own opportunities.

Opdop intends to coordinate efforts to guide and optimize the efforts of all players, but also to advise, train and recommend tools and solutions to those working in local development.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

The need for interconnection and making the regions more attractive to international providers is urgent. Internet in France is almost too centralized (in Paris) to allow a discussion of the network of networks. We must act in response to the needs of local development and interconnection, and isolated small, regional alternative providers.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Various elements come together when enough participants commit to being involved. A public catalogue (with a small private section for members) is then published which in turn opens the project to a larger public. The project is launched when self-financing is possible.
