About the project Edit

MixMarket is a non-profit organization that acts as an information provider for companies in the micro-finance sector.

Founded by the Consultative Group to Assist the Poor(CGAP), project evaluation by the information that each one can add to solidarity-based finance projects.

This platform helps financers judge the relevance of micro-credit institutions due to the vast number of criteria that each one can help determine.

MIX gathers and validates financial information and social performance data from micro-finance institutions (MFI’s) which is supplemented by information coming from networks, service suppliers, donors and investors.

Data is then normalized and provided to the public by MIX Market and various publications like the MicroBanking Bulletin, and reports and regional and national analyses on all micro-finance sectors.


In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

The model is particularly innovative because of its ability to create transparent information on projects in a contributive manner from the sources of a large number of stakeholders. Each one can then provide additional information on an MFI (that is validated by MIXMARKET).

This information can greatly accelerate collaboration between micro-finance institutions.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

By providing objective data and analyses on microfinance reporting, MIX hopes to:

- promote financial transparency in the industry
- build an infrastructure of information systems in developing countries
- provide a way to acquire a better understanding of MFI operations, challenges and trends for those involved (practitioners, donors, political decision-makers, universities)

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Today, MixMarket is described as the “information centre of microfinance”. Poeple from almost the entire world (115 countries) use it. This initiative can be deployed in every country in the next few years.

Furthermore, the model can be duplicated in other sectors and theoretically in all other project areas where the goal is to respond to social issues.
