About the project Edit

MentorNation is new initiative to support First Nations entrepreneurship in Canada. The online platform will provide a mechanism for matching aspiring Aboriginal entrepreneurs with successful business people across the country.

Join our crowdfunding campaign (https://www.giveffect.org/campaigns/174-mentor-nation) to help us get MentorNation up and running.

Find out more about our programs for Aboriginal Entrepreneurs at www.changeitup.ca.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

The project is a one-of-a-kind platform for seamlessly matching Aboriginal entrepreneurs with business mentors from across the country. We are also fundraising for the development of the platform through a first ever crowdfunding campaign to help First Nations. https://www.giveffect.org/campaigns/174-mentor-nation?ref=1&uid=263

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Aboriginal entrepreneurship is key to both self sufficiency and poverty reduction in First Nations communities. The research is clear that providing mentor relationships to start-up business owners increases success rates.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

While the initial pilot testing will be with Alberta entrepreneurs in the Change it Up! program in Samson Cree Nation (www.changeitup.ca), the purpose of the platform is to expand access to connect entrepreneurs and mentors across Canada.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

Classroom Connections has been running entrepreneur programs on reserve with great success (http://www.changeitup.ca/ciu-entrepreneur.html). It became apparent, however, that local mentors were often hard to find, given the limited economic base of many First Nations communities. Remote locations also proved a barrier to connecting with mentoring opportunities. We realized that our entrepreneurs needed mentorship to go virtual to work.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Classroom Connections is a charitable organization.
