About the project Edit

Loftcube is a German-built, personalised home container unit designed to rest atop rooftops designed by Werner Aisslinger. The 39 (or 55) square metre penthouse designed to be helicoptered to the location of your choice – as long as it’s on a rooftop. Once it is airlifted into place, it can be fully functional inside 2-4 days according to the architects. Essentially a square, caravan-like structure. the lightweight LoftCube is described as a ‘mobile home for urban nomads’. First exhibited at Berlin’s inaugural DesignMai festival in May 2003, LoftCube was based on the architect’s desire to create a minimalist, temporary retreat that was still a practical proposition for a dense inner-city location.

The structure, that can be set up in just 2 days and it only takes 24 hours to take down, is particularly lightweight in order to not affect the stability of a building that may host it and so that it can be transported anywhere, by crane or by helicopter, thereby satisfying the needs of even the most demanding metropolitan nomads. This very unique "treasure chest" measures 6.25 by 6.25 meters and has a height of 2.5 meters; inside, furnishings and fixtures divide the living area, the bedroom, bath and kitchen according to individual tastes and needs.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Loftcube is a creative way to make use of the free space on the roof of many city buildings. Free from any specific context, this mobile architectural structure is based on an innovative combination of spaces and aesthetics, which keeps costs to a minimum, even while offering a product with extraordinary visual impact and a great deal of comfort. From coordinated lights to under-floor heating, from the Corian kitchen to the bathroom where the same jet of water can transform itself from a shower to a designer sprinkler, LoftCube represents a successful integration of technology and design. The price tag attached to this unique conceptual housing arrangement is around 60,000 euros.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The goal of its creator is to utilize technological innovation, materials and novel construction systems to give life to objects and environments that will last over time, both physically and aesthetically. LoftCube incorporates aesthetics, design and reduced costs, inaugurating a new, extremely modern architectural tendency for those in search of quality, serial living space that can provide an original urban backdrop for anyone on the move.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

LoftCube has been transported to a California beach by a modeling agent and used as a "portable" changing room for actresses, but it has also become a panoramic office on a London rooftop; additionally, it has been situated on top of a pier as a fishing refuge in Canada. A French music foundation has even placed five of them among the ruins of an ancient castle in the countryside creating a futuristic base with minimal investment.
