About the project Edit

L'île du savoir promotes the emergence of a scientific culture and dynamic new generation in science and technology by bringing together partners from teaching and research institutions, scientific cultural organizations and the business world around developmental projects for the Island of Montreal.

Oriented towards collaboration and open innovation practices, L'île du savoir acts as a catalyst for new ideas in developing young people’s openness and skills in science and technology.

Activities centre on professional development programs, training camps and interactive events that are addressed to young people and teachers, as well as collaboration events that focus on developing and supporting innovative projects, such as:

- Sciences, on joue!
- Éclairs de sciences
- Top modèles pour ados
- Quand la science ressemble à quelqu'un
- Bioblitz urbain-journée des écoles
- Camp de base en jeu vidéo
- Laboratoire des sciences et technologies
- Le Rendez-vous de L'île du savoir

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

L’île du savoir is special because it develops and supports projects that promote direct dialogue between schools (teachers and students) and the scientific community (research and industry). The projects that are undertaken benefit from innovative approaches and creative contributions that respond effectively to an identified need and that are complementary to the social-economic actions of the Montreal partners.

Projects:

- bring about an innovative approach for active scientific discovery that focuses on stimulating the use of scientific activities to develop certain overall cognitive skills in children that are essential to stir scientific curiosity.

- focus on age groups that are not often targeted for scientific awareness programs and careers in these areas (ex. introduction to science for the youngest (3 to 5 years old); be open to the possibility of careers for students starting high school (12 to 14 year olds) before they have to choose their courses, mandatory for students finishing high school)

- have as a common thread the creativity of young people, teachers and their partners, whether it be by directly implementing interactive activities or undertaking emerging sectors in Montreal

What is the social value of this project? Edit

increasing the openness and interest of young people in response to science and technology and by increasing the number of young people who choose training in science and technology.

Field initiatives:

- support the development of young people’s interest and skills for science and technology
- maintain this interest throughout their schooling and prevent the risk of dropout from these disciplines
- help young people discover training and careers in science and technology
- promote the development of scientific culture, technique and innovation that allows Montrealers to fully exercise their citizenship
- promote exchanges between scientists, business and schools to prepare Montreal for tomorrow

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

We know that people’s knowledge is the most important resource of any community and that citizens are well-trained to contribute to social, economic, cultural life and, therefore, the sustainability of a society. With this in mind, in 2001 the Montreal regional conference of elected officials, with joint financing from the Government of Quebec, launched a vast operation promoting science and technology for youth on the Island of Montreal - L'île du savoir - which became a non-profit organization in 2006.

L'île du savoir’s mission is to create projects for teachers whose predominant role is to develop young people’s interest in science and technology. Gradually, Montreal businesses were also invited to contribute to this large collective project to see younger Montrealers enthusiastically embrace careers that promote the knowledge, dynamism and creativity of the Montreal region.
