About the project Edit

Les taxinomes is a participatory website that invites Internet users to compile a biodiversity inventory of photos, videos and sounds. These media are geolocalised and added to the phylogenetic classification of living organisms (in the modern sense). The website allows participants to build a multimedia library with their own media and those belonging to others. Notes and key words can be added to these media. It allows you to export media in RSS, GeoRSS and KML feed (ability to open these media on Google Maps or Google Earth).

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

The site is very simple to use, ergonomic, participatory and fun. Furthermore,
its use has yet to invent: educational pathways, motivating themes (inventory of the urban biodiversity of an area, identification of remarkable trees, etc.)

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The site connects people who are new to learning about biodiversity and phylogenetic classification. The requests for social links are such that a version 2 will support interaction between participants.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

This website is based on the SPIP skeleton "geodiversity" (http://www.geodiversite.net) which is a free software. This concept can apply to anything you can think of with respect to geolocalised multimedia.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

In January 2010, on the international year of biodiversity, I received an email from a friend who suggested that ''we could create a participatory site whose goal would be to provide a complete classification of living trees through pictures." A few months later, I discovered the project at http://www.geodiversite.net. Linking both ideas is how "Les Taxinomes.org" was created!

What is the business model of this project? Edit

This project is being undertaken courtesy of les petits débrouillards Bretagne (http://www.lespetitsdebrouillardsbretagne.org). It is also being subsidized by the government, local authorities and the state - CG of the Côtes d'Armor, Brest, the Brittany region and the delegation on the Uses of the Internet).
