About the project Edit

In France only, there close to 2.5 million people who have written something, often something good. Unfortunately, traditional publishing only launches between 500 and 1,000 new authors per year. These unknown authors are a financial risk for traditional even prestigious publishers because average sales for a new author’s first work is around 800 copies net return.

Moreover, rejections – often in the 98% range – rarely give a reason which leaves new authors in the dark most of the time.

Les Nouveaux Auteurs Publishing House was created to help more talent emerge thanks to two key principles:

- Opening its reading committee to the general public

- Huge national broadcast in all book networks in France (strong visibility for novels when it came out in independent bookstores, specialized signage (FNAC, Cultura, Espace Culturel Leclerc), hypermarkets, supermarkets, publishing houses, etc.) and for the most part outside of France as well. Distribution in the following French-speaking countries: Belgium, Switzerland, and Canada (Québec).

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Les Nouveaux Auteurs is a publishing house that setup the first CITIZEN READING COMMITTEE consisting of passionate, independent readers who are not part of the publishing world and who rate and assess manuscripts (a detailed reading card must be systematically filled out). Since 2007, hundreds of authors have been evaluated this way and thousands of reading cards have been published.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Using Les Nouveaux Auteurs’ private internal messaging system, evaluated authors and readers communicate daily. It is a unique experience for authors who benefit from comments and suggestions from real readers.

-> A real opportunity to get to the next phase in the selection process while avoiding hidden committees.

-> For every piece of work assessed, detailed notes and reading cards are systematically posted online, as well as onto an authors blog (optional) with a significant excerpt.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

This project can be expanded into any country with an active readership and a literary distribution network.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

Recognizing that there is a very strong imbalance of information between a very large number of authors or budding authors and a small number of editors who take the risk of publishing a first book.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Each book benefits from a significant initial setup – between 3,000 and 18,000 copies per book (2010-2011 figures according to Les Nouveaux Auteurs Website). For every published author, Les Nouveaux Auteurs offers a traditional publishing contract, broadcast/distribution by Interforum (Editis) and an advertising campaign for the most part.

In 2008, Les Nouveaux Auteurs joined forces with Femme Actuelle magazine and Prisma Presse group to launch a call for manuscripts. Thanks to the publishing house’s evaluation system, the best manuscripts were published and the best of those won the Grand Prix du Roman, grand prize for the best novel.

Based on prior grand prizes, Les Nouveaux Auteurs Publishing House launched the Yann Queffélec prize in 2012.
