About the project Edit

Portiron.fr puts individual consumers in touch with small producers who want to trade their garden or farm surplus with families looking for fresh regional produce. In short, it’s a way to save money, eat well and meet good people.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Simply put, it is the first marketplace dedicated to helping users locate produce in their area and connecting amateur producers with a professional service. What’s more, lePotiron.fr has since launched an information portal: lePotiblog.fr, the goal of which is to promote gardening and consumption models that are environmentally friendly, economical and have a human connection. In a desire to obtain high quality produce at a low cost, more and more French people are growing their own fruits and vegetables. According to a study by Lightspeed Research, 51% of the French population would like to be doing so by 2010. On the other hand, overproduction is frequent and there is currently no other practical way to use this surplus other than giving it to family and friends or freezing.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The eat local movement is gaining popularity due to a variety of considerations that include environmentalism, activism and desire to eat well and spend less. This movement is based on short-circuit distribution however these circuits remain largely unconnected and require highly committed memberships to a commercial websites for example, to buy directly from a local or regional farmer. At the same time, producers are looking to develop their direct distribution network. The current economic crisis and an increased environmental awareness make lePotiron.fr the ideal solution for the promotion of local produce. Buying locally and trading garden surplus reduces waste, stimulates the local economy and creates human connection. Many people who have the time and the desire to cultivate a small garden but have never done so because they have no means of unloading their extra produce. This project will thus encourage the development of small private gardens, which will also provide a fulfilling activity for the unemployed and retired.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

This project can easily be developed both in France and internationally. This concept can also be extended to the production of other goods such as, meat, eggs, wood, garden compost, etc.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

“Le Potiron.fr” was developed on December 4, 2009, during the first French edition of the start-up-weekend in Paris, an entrepreneurial event where projects developed on the same day or during the weekend compete. Amateur gardeners report that they very often produce more that they are able or willing to consume. Hence, the development a site which provides a way to exchange, sell or give away the surplus, thus giving it either social or economic value.
