About the project Edit

Je Eigen Stek is a a self-managed housing arrangement for and by previously homeless people.

"Je Eigen Stek houses people with varied backgrounds. Some of them have lived on the street for decades. Others only recently had to turn to the streets owing to the crisis."

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

JES is a community of previously homeless tenants to help each other find a way to resolve their problems and get out of the streets. It gives people the chance to help themselves.

This project is unique because it's a self-managed house where "residents use their own experiences and expertise, increasing and strengthening their own skills and self-esteem. Two professional social workers have been recruited by the residents to support and facilitate self-management. Their work is directed by the needs and the demands of the residents. "

What is the social value of this project? Edit

JES enables homeless people to take control of their life again by offering them support and enabling them to live somewhere where the still have to pay a little rent. It's a community that supports each other to get out of the streets.

Instead of focusing on what these people can't do, JES focuses on what they can do.
