Large-scale smart grid in a district that manages renewable energy production (solar panels, co-generation, micro-turbines…), energy consumption in homes, offices, stores…) and storage (batteries…) – all in the heart of the same district.

Public lighting and electric vehicle recharging infrastructures will also be included.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

IssyGrid, the first district smart grid in France, will be built in the Seine Ouest business district in Issy-les-Moulineaux with the goal of enabling energy optimization at the neighbourhood level.



Moreover, the IssyGrid initiative announced in mid-2011 is a virtually unique appraoch in France because it doesn’t come from the State, but a group of businesses located in the community and expanded to other companies. It is presented as an innovative realization in an energy managment system (smart grid) by multiple players and shows that the development of the smart grid is a new challenge for local businesses.

Lastly, the project is based on an experiment conducted in 2009 by Bouygues Immobiliser which was implementing the first energy-positive office building able to produce more energy than it consumed.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Alain Salmon, Director of Utilities at Steria explains, “There no system or equipment that lets you know exactly what a district’s consumption is and the objective of this project is to put into place just such a system with an industrial approach. We’re not talking about a closed and proprietary system, but one that combines many elements coming from various partners and to allow them to exchange data.”

Therefore, first phase of the operation consists of installing a monitoring system that tells you the global consumption of the buildings in question or residences with enough detail to then consider optimizing that consumption and then consider an incentive policy and outages for usage and during certain periods.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The initiative is located in the district centre and is run by a group of nine businesses that has a large pool of expertise including in the areas of: residential and commercial real estate, telecommunications, software and engineering software, energy transportation and new energy production...


The deployment process will be implemented in three stages:

1. Energy consumption will be measured for all types of use, including: office, home, business, public lighting and electric vehicle recharging stations

2. Installation of solar panels, co-generation units and other energy production resources and other
energy storage devices (batteries, flywheels…)

3. Production, consumption and storage systems will be shared and managed as a whole in order to identify areas of energy optimization
