Location: Provinces of Huancané (Districts: Huancané, Huatasani, Taraco,
Vilquechico and Huayrapata) and Azángaro (Districts: Azángaro, Arapa, Chupa, Samán and

The program began in 2005 under the initiative of leading cattle producers in the Huancané province, who sought the support of CARE Peru and engaged other farming communities. The goal is to make rural production profitable, generating employment and income to improve living conditions.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

With the support of CARE Peru, the National Fund for Job Training and Promotion Employment, and municipal authorities, the farming community developed a strategy of "chains" to increase productivity from the provision of inputs to livestock marketing.

Participatory research led to conclude that farmers must concentrate their efforts in breeding and the release of beef cattle, and develop a new marketing model.
Harmonizing modern techniques with traditional knowledge, they developed new forages and mixtures according to the conditions; they selected animals for the area defining phenotypes to reduce animal movements and the waste of energy. They also established a health package that improves livestock management, parasite control, vaccination and identification and management of diseases.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The increase in production capacity has enabled farmers to increase productivity and reduce production costs.

Forms of organization were developed, that allows farmers to associate for marketing business, avoiding middlemen. Thus, direct market came from Lima and Arequipa getting prices significantly higher than those receiving before joining.

The project has increased the average household income by 84%. Near 3,600 families have been trained and generated more than 1,000 jobs in the Huancané and Azángaro provinces. All this has been possible by families working together, which now allows the self-financing program, and monetary support of CARE PERU.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The results of the program expanded beyond the initial goal of generating income and employment. By improving the prairies, they have today nutritious food for animals throughout the year. They have built physical infrastructure to protect the animals from inclement weather that occur in these heights. Families have access to comfort which allows a better quality of life, overcoming poverty and integrating the development, which results in better health, nutrition and education.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

After years of economic failure using traditional production processes livestock, requiring long periods of aging with little weight of animals, we made a ​​participatory research. It demonstrated the need to increase livestock productivity through technical fattening and marketing based on local organic resources.
