About the project Edit

Nuage Vert is an urban art project that uses the smoke from a factory chimney as a projection screen to make people aware of a site that is visible and ignored - a waste incinerator. The project was initiated by HeHe (Helen Evans and Heiko Hansenun), a German-British group based in Paris. The first green cloud appeared in the sky in 2008 during the Pixelache festival in Helsinki.

The green cloud works like this: the environmental installation projects a florescent green shadow on a cloud of smoke released from an incinerator. With a thermal camera connected to a laser, the projection does not only use the smoke as support but it revealcloud as it emerges. In the interactive scenario, the size of the cloud reacts in real-time according to the statistics of the plant. The less waste is released, the smaller the cloud. This data serves to inform local residents about their own consumption. In fact, the smoke that is released from the incinerators (household waste) speaks to the resident's quality of life.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

In a way, the project Hehe nuage vert is a community art project where the citizen realizes the impact that their waste production has on pollution and the environment. It is both an intriguing show and a stage where the spectator becomes the actor. The smoke screen is both fascinating and disturbing, given all the questions that the public is asking regarding the cloud and its supposed benefits. Nuage Vert has won numerous international awards including the Ars Electronica Golden Nica in 2008.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Beyond the spectacle, the project aims to bring together different actors in the field: the incineration plant, public institutions, environmental activists, residents, cultural operators, to a project that is artistic, collective and civic. With the help of local schools, community centres, associations, the project aims to create a dialogue with residents.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The Nuage Vert was first introduced in Helsinki in 2008. The installation, however, has high potential for implementation in other cities and other incinerators. A number of projection attempts have been realized elsewhere in the suburbs of Paris, Ivry and Saint Ouen where the project has generated strong reactions.
It is interesting to note that installing the Nuage Vert has resulted in the declension of other projects from the Hehe duo which aim to - educate citizens about air pollution problems through an interdisciplinary mix of industrial designs, engineering and environmental commitments.
