A videoconferencing system for citizens

About the project Edit

The municipality of Guldborgsund in Denmark (population of 64,000 inhabitants, the 10th largest city in the country) has launched a videoconferencing system for citizens seeking access to municipal services through "digital cabins" ("digital booths") located in three municipal centres. The high-speed interactive video allows residents to interact with city employees, which offer services from different offices throughout the city. The project is managed by the city's central government.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Using videoconferencing in an urban and municipal context is relatively rare. The traditional format of digital interaction rather refers to web 1.0 exchanges (downloading files, performing transactions via websites, e-government type solutions).

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The project has generated a high level of satisfaction among citizens. It makes it possible to have a social human interaction with a dedicated agent. The project is also part of a larger program that is progressing towards creating a "smart city" enabling residents to limit their trips and reduce their carbon footprint. However, the number of agents proposed to accommodate administrative demands was slightly reduced to the extent that they would no longer have to be duplicated in different municipal centres.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The system is managed by the municipality, which operates its own equipment. No separate legal entity has been created for that purpose, reducing the administrative complexity of managing such a project. Technical solutions are also considered to be relatively simple (no use of outsourcing or cloud computing). Finally, the costs announced (2.7M DKK) are relatively modest. With that in mind, the project can easily be duplicated in other cities.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit
