About the project Edit

Glif is a visual language, created by 5000 children throughout the world, that started with 800 signs. All the signs were created by children from 9 disadvantaged schools around the globe (India, Senegal, Cuba, Nepal, Hungary, Tunisia, Vietnam ...). Its essential driving force was a group of teenagers from Paris.

The structure of this language is simple. Glifs are ideograms expressing a specific word. The syntax of each sentence is presented in a conventional and intuitive manner, like in most languages. Glif can be used via a program specifically created by software developers in virtual keyboard form - free for downloading through the Glif website. The Glif keyboard makes it possible to write Glif messages, which can then be sent directly over the Internet, through a standard mail server. In addition, le GLIF has developed a new font (.ttf) making it possible to be used in all "proprietary" software .

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

GLIF is an original way of using the Internet, in particular, it is a way to break through the language barriers between children around the world.

The uniqueness of this technical development also relies on the creation of a collaborative Glif forum, where developers around the world can participate in its development - both in terms of graphics and programming.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The Glif language is used to communicate and send messages, but it is also a true artistic language, that makes it possible to create a graphical and symbolic language. Based on the principle of mandalas, drawings of peace in the Buddhist religion, Glif drawings or paintings associate playing with the format and content. These drawings, as well as the profound significance of facilitating communication between peoples and cultures, make Glif a language of peace. It is a medium for exchange that shows respect for others and their identity - without imposing one's language over another - stimulating the desire to know and talk. GLIF's true primary objective is to deliver education on peace and language among peoples.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The GLIF project may develop in other areas - civic or business. The GLIF is, in fact, a graphical, tangy and playful concept making its commercial application possible in many forms. First and foremost, the idea is to finance all of the sustainable education projects, with the same requirement for participatory involvement in schools.
