About the project Edit

The Salvation Army Gateway is a shelter and drop-in center for adults experiencing homelessness in the downtown core of Toronto.

We aim to be a Gateway, for everyone who comes through our doors, towards things such as community, belonging, dignity, respect, recovery, reconciliation, friendship, and God. We are a community that works diligently to send a strong and clear message to all people who come here that everyone in our midst is equal. No member of our community, including staff, volunteers, funders, or community members, is more or less important than anyone else

We believe that all people have been created in the image of God. Therefore we believe that every person has gifts to offer the world. It is out of our faith in the Creator God that we do not believe that there is anyone that comes here that has no hope.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

We believe that a holistic approach is required if we are to truly help those that come to the Gateway, and that's why we focus on helping to provide a home, a job and a friend. We make sure that everyone who stays with us for more than one week is connected to our Counselling staff and that they're on track to cultivate these things (as much as possible) in their life.

Through our Linens Program we provide employment for 5 men at time that leads to stable, full-time work with a reputable company in Toronto. Each month, our housing workers help an average of 15 people to find appropriate housing, and it is nearly impossible to be at the Gateway for any stretch of time without our Frontline Staff learning your name.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Cultivating a healthy community for homeless and marginalized folks is crucial in a city like Toronto. Because we have been in the downtown core providing shelter for 118 men per night for nearly 14 years, we are well-known as a clean and safe place to go for anyone in distress.
