About the project Edit

From Nîmes to Somewhere Else is a cultural mediation project dedicated to digital mapping in libraries. It uses Nîmes and its suburbs as a background and looks for the opening towards a somewhere else made up of similar mapping experiences.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

“From Nîmes to Somewhere Else” is built around two main functionalities on Wordpress. The first lets the mapping project to be editorialized in a personal space. The second creates an interactive map that media can be geolocalized on. Eventually, the project will serve as a based to create a plugin that editorializes cultural content for Wordpress accessible by the general public.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The project is completely open source. Reusing the existing fork and using it for personal mapping projects will be possible. Its greatest strength is focusing on the editorial aspects that are often overlooked on classic mapping tools. It can be used in very large mediation contexts (workshops, residences, events, travel diaries and/or web reports).

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The potential is significant because we see putting these functionalities in a plugin that will let users in the Wordpress and OpenStreetMap communities to converge. They will be augmented by additional functionality linked more to the stylistic operation of the map and its data.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

The triggering factor was in part the growing need and on the other, the public’s infatuation with digital mapping. To respond to this need, the meeting between engineers and artists, from Labomédia in Orléans and its leaders Benjamin Cadon and Nicolas Derambure was also a determining factor. Furthermore, they had initiated a previous mapping project, Métamap. Finally, through the F.E.D.E.R Languedoc Roussillon, Europe allowed this project to see the light of day.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

We would like to develop a business model where our community of reference (city and/or Nîmes suburb) can be a driving force in the project’s development. We think that local authorities can be important drivers of cooperation and development by passing agreements / conventions with MediaLab or FabLab communities. The idea is to build custom social tools that facilitate public access and give value to content in cultural places.
