About the project Edit

Kinect: a natural and interactive user interface for digital content.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

This project combines a city, an industrialist (Achividéo, maquette 3D), and an internet-user association with knowledge of hacking. Over 1200 people contributed to the interface in 2011.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The device allows people, whether they are French-speaking or not, well versed in technology or not, to interact directly with content without the aid of a mouse or keyboard. The device was successfully tested on Laval Virtual (1000 visitors), at Puzzle, a homeless shelter in Rennes and with foreigners. It worked perfectly when used by elderly people and equally well with large groups of children. We are working to develop settings for users in wheelchairs. Kinect costs about 130 euros. The source code for programming the device for use with a web browser and other applications are available online. In short, Forward to the past is a pilot project with the goal of providing a widely available, low-cost, modern method of accessing to web content.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The potential to expand and develop this project is very great, provided the development of ergonomic, high-value added content.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

Informal discussion among hackers and the “Laval Revolution” call for demos for Laval Virtual 2011. Forward to the Past was the only French project selected, with the other 14 selected projects being Japanese.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

A device that fits in a suitcase, that allows us to lower installation and transportation costs, and that also has a strong impact on all audiences. The cost of this device is about 3% of that of large-scale natural user interfaces (large tactile muti-touch screens).
