About the project Edit

Flattr is the first money sharing project that aims to help people transfer funds between them in a really easy and cheap way. It is an online platform that is available to anyone. Flattr regroups people that wish to promote content (bloggers, artists, film-makers, podcaster, software developpers, NGOs etc...) and receive money for it.

When you're registered to flattr, you pay a small monthly fee. You set the amount yourself. You find content you like around the web, once you want to "like" something you press a Flattr button. At the end of each month, your fee is divided between all the things you flattered, and your money is sent to them. Clicking one more button doesn't add to your fee, it just divides the fee between more people! Flattr tries to encourage people to share. Not only pieces of content, but also some money to support the people who created them. With love!

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Flattr was founded to help people share money, not just content. Before Flattr, the only reasonable way to donate has been to use Paypal or other systems to send money to people. The threshold for this is quite high. People would just ignore the option to send donations if it wasn't for a really important cause. Sending just a small sum has always been a pain in the ass. Who would ever even login to a payment system just to donate €0.01? And €10 was just too high for just one blog entry we liked...Flattr solves this issue.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

We hope to change the definition of the word "creator". If we are successfull that means that anyone can be a creator. In truth, everyone is a creator but traditionally we don't consider everybody to be a creator. We feel that creators that before could not receive money as easily as the mass media can (since they lack a price tag, the distribution circuits, etc..) will be able to benefit most from our system.

Moreover, we consider that today, with all the information available, people that are "just" participating in discussions of new content can be as important as the data itself. Therefore, we consider them to be creators and can therefore be flattrd like any other creator.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

As of April 2011, there are about 100 000 members worldwide using Flattr exchanging about 100 000€ monthly. We feel that this project can be expanded much further, as it is available to anyone that has access internet access.
