About the project Edit

DoSomething.org was created 16 years ago, and today, it is one of the largest organizations in the US that helps young people rock causes they care about. By leveraging the web, television, mobile, and pop culture, DoSomething.org inspires, empowers and celebrates a generation of doers: teenagers who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action. In 2009, DoSomething.rog won a Webby award.

DoSomething.org is based on a strong willingness to bet on teenagers. This is why DoSomething.org is committed to provide them with the tools they needs to take action and develop their own projects, indeed, DoSomething.org:

- Provides tool kits and publishes action guides
- Gives the teenagers the opportunity to create DoSomethign.org clubs
- Provides them with grants
- Organizes a social boot camp every summer
- Rewards the most amazing teenagers with Do Something Awards.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Three key rules contribute to make this project unique: No Money, No Car, No Adults. This means that the organization never fundraises from teens, only goes where teens are and never asks them to travel out of their communities or comfort zones and never requires an adult advisor or chaperone.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

One of the objectives of DoSomething.org is to create a culture of volunteerism among teenagers: currently, only 23% of this generation actively volunteers. DoSomething.org hopes to create a generation of do-ers: a world where more than 51% of young people are involved with community action.

Today, DoSomething.org is the largest national database of teen volunteer opportunities in the US. It published 30,000+ pages of content with tools and resources for helping teens take action. In 2009, 850,000 teens took action through their programs, and 1,500 were given directly to young people to fund their community projects. DoSomething.org also clothed 1/3 the youth homeless population in the US by collecting 625,000 pairs of jeans during an annual Teens for Jeans campaign 200,000 of which went to youth in Haiti.

DoSomething.org is on track to activate two million young people in 2011. 3.1 Do Something clubs are created every day (over 1,200 and growing).

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Recently, the organization has received requests for international expansion from all continents. A first experience outside the US is being piloted in Portugal. The organization wishes to develop franchises all over the world in the upcoming years.
