About the project Edit

The dance school Dançando para não dançar offers free ballet classes to kids that live in Rio de Janeiro favelas.

"Dançar" in Brazil means "to dance" but the slang term means "to be lost", "to lose our way". Dançando para não dançar therefore means "Dancing for not to be lost"

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

The scool offers free ballet classes, and organizes shows fro the community. It offers grants for students to travel abroad and creates a sense of community and perseverance within the kids.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

This project fights social exclusion of underprivileged kids by introducing them to arts, discipline and patience. Ballet, an art usually reserved for higher classes, becomes now available to them. Kids learn perseverance and become more confident that they can achieve something extraordinary!

Dancando para nao dancar also enables kids to travel (an opportunity they maybe wouldn't have had otherwise), with grants that the school offers. 2 ballerinas were especially sent to take ballet classes in Germany for a few weeks.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

The project is now present in 14 communities of the Rio de Janeiro area!

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

Dançando para não dançar was founded by Thereza Aguilar in 1995.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

The school is an association.
