About the project Edit

Costockage is a market place that connects individuals looking for storage space (when moving, university exchange, etc.) and people with available spaces (basements, indoor parking spaces, unused bedrooms, etc.). We provide the payment system, as well as insurance.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

We are the first on the marketing in France and propose a credible alternative to self-storage centres that have huge warehouses that are difficult to access and whose service is generally expensive and inflexible.

In a way, we are the unwanted child of AirBnB and Une Pièce En Plus.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

We respond to an urban and environmental issue: why build gigantic warehouses to store items when our houses and apartments are bursting with unused space? Currently in beta, we already have 3,000 square metres referenced in France. That’s the equivalent to three warehouses that don’t have to be built.

We are always aware of our slogan: Space is precious – let’s share it!

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

We contribute to the huge growth of the self-storage market in France that is increasing at close to 15% per year. This growth is fed by a very strong mobility (28% of French people moved in 2011) and by the increase of prices in the housing market. People often have to find temporary storage space to store moving boxes, mementos, seasonal items, family furniture, etc.

Traditional self-storage solutions are too expensive, too far from downtown and not very flexible. We want to remedy these three inconveniences.

We allow individuals to make a profit on spaces that, until now, were unused and therefore were not aware of their value.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

It was at Scouts that the idea to create Costockage came about. One day, our group needed a place to store material. We asked for quotes from self-storage centres. They were extremely expensive and not close by.

Instead, we rented a basement and parking spot from a friend who wasn’t using either and thanks to us, he was able to supplement his income.

The idea was born.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Our revenues are based on commission and are, therefore, dependant on prices set by the owners on our platform. We only earn money when our members do. This commission is completely off-set by the renter of the space, not by the owner and includes insurance.
