About the project Edit

The first event took place at the end of September 2012 in Saint-Ouen, less than two months after a similar event in Brest. The idea consisted of bringing together the more traditional DIY enthusiasts of all colours with makers, hackers and fanatics to create a moment where sharing was the word of the day.

3D printers and Arduinos deal with the free furniture making of Italian designer Enzo Mari where temporary henna tattoos, as well as fashion and making electronic sensors with current material, met.

A huge place is provided for free licences (open source and Creative Commons licences). A copy party organized by the municipal media library in Brest enriched the event in a culture of sharing (with a mini music station to share free music).

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

This event is popular because it combines the attraction of do-it-yourself, open licences, hacking and especially the idea of acting together.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

During an event, it is putting the workshop first. Instead of organizing a kind of lounge or salon that would be overlooked, we chose to organize 30 to 60 minute sessions that brought together many people who wanted to learn. The Camp Brest Open Bidouille in this way allowed people to take the time to discover, initiate themselves in or deepen their knowledge of something. It was also a place of serendipity where we could experience unexpected activities like fashion, 3D printing, soup and weld, DIY sensors, books, etc.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Following the Camp Brest Open Hack in Saint-Ouen, there was a real interest for this kind of event since the one in Brest was organized (http://openbidouillecamp.mdl29.net) less than two months later and got a Bordeaux team motivated enough to do another one. The original team, who came up with the concept, founded the Open Bidouille (Hack) Association http://openbidouille.net.

In terms of Brest, there will be at least another Open Bidouille in 2013 during the Brest Common Goods.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

Clearly, when the enthusiasm for a Saint-Ouen Open Bidouille Camp inundated Twitter, the catalyst was the small friendly challenge launched by the people of Brest.

Finally, it’s also the Brest culture of cooperation and good knowledge reciprocated by stakeholders on the ground for several year that works together to help create this dynamic.
