About the project Edit

Affectionately called Friendly Alien, for its radically new and almost extraterrestrial look, BIX is a matrix of 930 fluorescent lamps integrated into the eastern Plexiglas facade of the Kunsthaus Museum in Graz, Austria. Through the possibility to individually adjust the lamps’ brightness at an infinite variability with 20 frames/second images, films and animations can be displayed. The BIX concept was initiated and developed by Berlin-based designers realities:united. The matrix acts as a communicative membrane between the exhibition building and public space, on which computer animations, graphics and letters can be programmed. It conveys the impression that the signs and shapes are being generated not on a pre-installed screen but by the building itself.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

BIX is a unique synthesis of architecture and media art. The architects also had to use a whole lot of creativity has they has to merge this additional architectural concept onto an already existing facade. BIX was a new element designed to entirely dominate the main facade of the Kunsthaus thereby radically redefining the architectural concept of the building’s skin.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

More than a facade, BIX is an experimental laboratory. The facade as a display extends the communication range of the Kunsthaus, complementing its programmatically formulated communicative purpose. In an abstract and mediated form the media facade transmits the internal processes of the Kunsthaus out into the public. The Kunsthaus Museum’s content producer has the chance to develop methods for a dynamic communication between building and surroundings, between content and outside perception.
