About the project Edit

Beyond The Carboard is an organization aimed at helping the homeless in two ways: by giving them a voice and by providing them tangible resources to overcome homelessness.
Jessica Choi, an undergraduate student at Harvard College, founded Beyond the Cardboard with Thomas Ma and Brian Ma.

Themes

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Thanks to Beyond the Carboard, homeless people will be able to share their stories and give them a voice to change how we perceive them. The organization will provide them with resources to accomplish their dreams before the street life takes them.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Beyond the cardboard will serve as the platform through which we empower the homeless with a voice, sharing their stories and raising awareness about the reality of homelessness. The organization would focus mainly on helping those who are substance abusers and mentally unstable.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

This project could develop into different cities across United States and global resources can be mobilized to expand the range of help around the world.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

“At the end of the day, we just need someone to listen. It was the first time we sat down with a homeless person. Listening to her speak changed what we thought we knew about homelessness. They weren’t just the people holding cardboard signs on the streets asking for money to buy drugs and alcohol. They were much more. Yes, some are substance abusers, but many others are veterans, victims of domestic abuse, and young runaways. Some have jobs; others aspire to be entertainers, writers, and chefs. We wanted to share their stories and give them a voice so they could be heard. We wanted to change how homelessness is perceived and also provide the homeless with resources to rise above their situation. No existing organizations had this focus. That was when Beyond the Cardboard was born."

What is the business model of this project? Edit
