About the project Edit

Best Buy and Ecotality have partnered to install EV chargin stations in various Best Buy stores. This partnership was made available, in part, thanks to grants offered by the U.S. Department of Energy. Access to electric chargers in parking lots will allow the owners of electric cars to get them charged in a variety of places outside their home. From an environmental point of vue, this will encourage consumer shift from traditional gas consuming cars to the more environmentally friendly electric ones.

This partnership is part of a larger move from Best Buy to facilitate access to electric cars. Another partnership with Ford will facilitate the to offer branded charging stations and support to customers. They line up the electrician and equipment, no effort needed from the customer. This is in addition to a multitude of other chargers the company sells, and also follows an attempt by the company to sell electric motorcycles.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

This is an opportunity for Best Buy to bring considerable social and environmental impact while strengthening its competitiveness. This is a private meets social good initiative which goes beyond traditional CSR initiatives.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Partnering to offer electric chargers in stores offers owners of electric cars flexibility and facilitates the adoption of the new technology, especially in urban areas. There is therefore tremendous potential for social and environmental impact

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Not all Best Buy stores offer these stations. If consumers respond well, we could envision charging stations to be installed near all stores.
In the case of Best Buy charging stations make considerable sense since they are themselves selling equipment for electric cars. Other stores targeting a similar demographic could be inclined to install these chargers to offer extra value to their consumers

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

What is the business model of this project? Edit

This project is the result of a partnership between Ecotality and Best Buy with the support of the US department of Energy. For the pilot project, Best Buy installed the chargers without cost. Nonetheless, if the chargers do improve competitiveness, we could envision Best Buy choosing to pay for more chargers.
