About the project Edit

Bela Arte Jazz is a free Jazz music school for children and teens from the age of 8 to 16 that live in the favela Cantagalo and Pavão Pavãozinho.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Bela Arte Jazz is the first music school of this kind in the favela. It offers classes, shows, theory classes and enables children to discover a wide range of jazz music. Throughout the year, lots of free shows are prepared for the community, so they can see and witness the progression of the students.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

A project like Bela Arte Jazz introduces the young members of the community to the musical influences of famous jazz musicians, an influence they maybe wouldn't have otherwise. Such a school teaches them discipline and patience and enables them to express themselves creatively. Instruments are usually expensive, but Bela Arte Jazz lands them for free.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

"Leonardo Januario started this project. He is a resident of Cantagalo, and runs the Jazz classes free of charge. He has had some support, and has had about 18 instruments donated – all of which he loans out to his students. His dream is to be wondering round Cantagalo, hearing the sounds of Jazz echoing around the neighbourhood. "

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Bela Arte Jazz is non for profit initiative.
