About the project Edit

Architecture for Humanity is a nonprofit design services firm founded in 1999. By tapping a network of more than 40,000 professionals willing to lend time and expertise to help those who would not otherwise be able to afford their services, it brings design, construction and development services to communities in need and disaster-stricken areas.

Architecture for Humanity is a catalyst for innovation. It considers that design is the ultimate renewable resource. It promotes architectural and design solutions to global, social and humanitarian crises. Through design/build projects, competitions, workshops, educational forums, partnerships with aid organizations and other activities, Architecture for Humanity creates opportunities for architects and designers from around the world to help communities in need. Architecture for humanity developed the Open Architecture Network. This on-line network empowers architects, designers, builders and their clients to share architectural plans and drawings—including CAD files. All plans are shared through an open-source model and can be freely downloaded by all.

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

The Open Architecture Network is the first site to offer open source architectural plans and drawings inline viewing of CAD files. It has the ability to collaborate, manage projects remotely, and share design knowledge. It grew out of the collective frustration in sharing ideas and trying to work together to address shelter needs after disaster, in informal settlements and in our own communities.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The Open Architecture Network is an online, open source community dedicated to improving living conditions through innovative and sustainable design. Far from replacing the traditional architect, the goal of the network is to allow designers to work together in a whole new way, a way that enables 5 billion potential clients to access their skills and expertise. The network has a simple mission: to generate not one idea but the hundreds of thousands of design ideas needed to improve living conditions for all.
