About the project Edit

Allô Prof is a non-profit organization that supports kids staying in school. Its mission is to provide free homework help for students and parents in Quebec.

To support its mission, Allô Prof’s team of qualified teachers provide online and telephone assistance in a virtual community made up of students, parents and various players in the education sector.

Born in 1996 from the collective will to provide free distance learning support to children in grades 1 to 5, Allô Prof’s team of teachers created the thousands of audiovisual and interactive learning content found on its website.

Themes

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Allô Prof stands out internationally because of its diversity, amount of content and number of learning tools. With Allô Prof, all Quebec students and their parents can get explanations for school – regardless of subject matter, level of learning, region or economic situation.

What is the social value of this project? Edit

Since its start in 1996, Allô Prof has helped to ensure that more than 3 million homework assignments were submitted by students. Each assignment that is done properly is a new accomplishment that adds to a student’s academic progress. By accumulating successes, Allô Prof helps young people persevere and complete their studies.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

Through ongoing innovation, Allô Prof develops new online tools that respond to the greatest part of students’ and parents’ needs. Its ambition is to be a school safety net for the one million students in Quebec. Evolution of new technologies should allow the organization to build a new platform to fully realize its mission in the next few years.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

In the early 1990s, the main players in Quebec’s education system were considering which ways would best encourage students to stay and be successful in school. From this desire, Allô Prof created an educational structure able to support students and their parents from all backgrounds. Developing new technology has allowed the organization to take a revolutionary turn in the 2000s. Since then, demand for the service has increased exponentially. More than 1.5 million homework assignments were submitted in 2010-2011 thanks to Allô Prof services.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

Allô Prof is supported by the Ministry of Education, Recreation and Sports, as well as public and private organizations active in keeping kids in school, including: Rogers, Rio Tinto Alcan, National Bank, Télé-Québec, the Montreal School Board and Les Fonds Universitas.
