About the project Edit

Audio description uses technical materials. We must, therefore, acquire specialized material. We also need financial support to develop training and prepare the plays.

Association Ab Oculis CCP 12-600960-1

The association is developing an innovative project in French-speaking Switzerland with the help of a variety of professionals.

Our goals are:

- to democratize access to culture by improving accessibility to cultural links for the visually-impaired and the blind

- to develop audio description for visually-impaired people in the theatre

Themes

In what ways is this project unique and creative? Edit

Innovative project in Swiss theatre
Project that creates jobs: audio description training
Expertise in visual impairment
Multi-disciplinary team of Ab Oculis association members with skills in the arts and social domains
Links to an extensive network

What is the social value of this project? Edit

The Ab Oculis Association creates action in developing cultural democratization and, therefore, helps disabled people to participate in community life.

What is the potential of this project to expand and develop? Edit

We tested audio description in the 2010-2011 theatre season. It was a great success not only with visually-impaired people, but with umbrella organizations in the field and theatre professionals around the world, as well as the media.

To date, the audio description market in Swiss theatre needs to be built. Eighty to a hundred thousand people with a visual impairment are listed in Switzerland.

As well, we work with the Haute École de Théâtre in Lausanne to develop an HES audio describer that will give a few theatre workers access a new trade.

What was the triggering factor of this project? Edit

With Felice Impala and Emmanuel Pechin, students graduating from the HES SO in social work program, we developed a theatre accessibility project for the visually-impaired and the blind within a practical work module. By creating the Ab Oculis Association, our objective is to help realize and sustain audio description in Switzerland.

What is the business model of this project? Edit

There is currently no competition in the market because setting up audio description directly to the theatre is a first in Switzerland. Our project is innovative and also creates jobs.

Ours is a non-profit association.
